ALGIERS, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Algerian forces on Tuesday recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition and military equipment during a security operation in the In Guezzam region, about 2,000 km south of the capital Algiers.

The operation, based on security intelligence, seized an all-terrain vehicle, five Kalashnikov assault rifles, three PKM-type machine guns, four DShK heavy machine guns, an anti-aircraft machine gun, an RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade launcher, a mortar, as well as four PG-7V rockets, the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement.

The sweep also recovered 2,587 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, eight ammunition magazines, and two mobile phones, it said.

It did not specify the origin of these items.

The operation was part of Algeria's ongoing efforts to secure its vast southern borders and counter illicit arms trafficking, it added.
