Portuguese president calls for stronger child protection amid poverty concerns

LISBON, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro on Monday called for stronger efforts to protect vulnerable children, citing recent data showing that about 301,000 children were living in poverty in Portugal in 2024.

In a message marking World Children's Day, Seguro warned that many children continue to face poverty, neglect, violence and social exclusion, with some lacking access to adequate food, education and recreational activities.

While noting progress in promoting children's rights and the implementation of Portugal's 2025-2035 strategy for children and young people, Seguro said lasting results would require the active involvement of society as a whole.

He urged greater support for vulnerable groups, including children with disabilities, those from minority communities and those exposed to violence or risks in the digital environment.
