Death toll from severe weather in Portugal rises to 16 after Leiria accident

LISBON, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- A man died Monday and another was injured in a workplace accident in Leiria, while carrying out repairs on electrical infrastructure damaged by Storm Kristin.

Leiria, approximately 140 kilometers north of Lisbon, is among the areas most severely affected by recent extreme weather, with extensive damage to electrical infrastructure prompting widespread repair operations.

According to the Leiria District Command of the Public Security Police, the victim was 37 years old and the injured was 40. Both were employees of a company which provides services to E-Redes.

With this worker's death, the number of fatalities linked to the severe weather that has hit the country has risen to 16, with the central region among the hardest hit.

E-Redes stated it deeply regrets the death of one worker and the injury of another, both employed by one of its partner companies, during network restoration work following storms that affected the country.
