Portugal sees homicide levels reach seven-year high in 2025

LISBON, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Portugal recorded at least 108 intentional homicides in the past year, the highest number since 2018, when 110 were counted, Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias reported Friday, citing Annual Internal Security Report data (RASI).

The 108th case occurred less than two hours before the end of 2025. It was a result of a family conflict at Leirosa beach, Figueira da Foz, approximately 195 km north of Lisbon, according to the RASI, a document analyzing the country's internal security situation.

The rise in homicides comes amid broader discussions about public security resources and law enforcement capacity in Portugal.

Although the 2025 increase represents a concerning trend for authorities monitoring public safety indicators, Portugal maintains relatively low homicide rates compared to global averages.
