Vidal sorry for outburst during Flamengo game

03 Feb 2023, 11:05 GMT+10

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Veteran Flamengo midfielder Arturo Vidal issued a public apology on Thursday after his fit of rage during the Brazilian club's 1-0 home victory over Boavista.

Vidal, an unused substitute in the Rio de Janeiro state league match on Wednesday, was captured by cameras angrily throwing a water bottle and a boot while sitting on the bench at the Maracana stadium.

"First of all, I want to apologize for my reaction during yesterday's game," the Chilean wrote in a social media post.

"I know that sometimes my temperament gets the better of me. But I have come to Flamengo to be happy and be part of its history. I will continue fighting to be there and I will never give up, because that's how I am," the former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus player added.

The controversy came less than a week before Flamengo's first match of the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco. The Rio outfit will meet the winner of the clash between Morocco's Wydad Athletic Club and Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal on February 7 for a place in the final.

Vidal joined Flamengo on a free transfer last July and helped the club secure a third Copa Libertadores title - South America's top club trophy - three months later.

The 35-year-old's contract is due to expire in December, but media reports in Brazil have speculated he could leave sooner.
