ALGIERS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Former Algerian Interim President and former Speaker of the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament), Abdelkader Bensalah, died on Wednesday in Algiers at the age of 79, the official APS news agency reported.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered flags to be flown at half-mast throughout the country for three days in honor of Bensalah. Algeria will hold his funeral on Thursday.
Algerian parliament on April 9, 2019 appointed Bensalah as the interim president, after the resignation of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika on April 2, 2019.
Algeria held presidential election on Dec. 12, 2019 and Tebboune won the election.
