NANCHANG, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Over 1,000 white cranes have been spotted on a farm by Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake.
Some 33 hectares of farmland on Kangshan Farm, in Yugan County of east China's Jiangxi Province, have been left unharvested to increase the food stock for wild waterfowl wintering in the area.
Severe floods last year affected the growth of the aquatic plants on which wintering birds on the lake depend upon for food.
Poyang Lake boasts an intact ecosystem and is an important wintering spot for waterfowl in Asia. The peak migration period for birds heading to the lake is from mid-December to early January.
Local authorities have launched an annual law enforcement operation to crack down on illegal acts of damaging wetlands and hunting migratory birds.
