LONDON, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Portugal international Diogo Jota has joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers, the English Premier League champions confirmed on Saturday.

The 23-year-old forward has signed a five-year contract with a reported transfer fee of 41 million pounds (52 million U.S. dollars).

"It's just a really exciting moment for me and my family," Jota told Liverpool's website." All of my path since I was a kid and now, to join a club like Liverpool - the world champions - is just unbelievable. I just want to get started."

The Portuguese spent three seasons with Wolves, and was the team's top scorer with 17 goals when they secured promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship in the 2017/18 season.

During the last two seasons in the Premier League, Jota scored 16 goals in 67 appearances as Wolves finished seventh in back-to-back campaigns.

Jota is Liverpool's third signing this summer, following Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara and Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he believed Jota's arrival would give his team different options.

"He has the speed, he can combine, can defend, can press. It makes it just more unpredictable and gives us real options for different systems because he can play pretty much all three positions up front in a 4-3-3. If we play with four midfielders he can play both wings," said the German coach.

Liverpool visit Chelsea on Sunday after starting the new Premier League season with a 4-3 victory over newly-promoted Leeds United last Saturday.
