RABAT, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan police said that they seized on Thursday 5 tons and 222 kg of cannabis near Casablanca, the North African country economic hub.
The banned substance was concealed in 150 packages in an underground storage inside a farm in the town of Had Soualem near Casablanca, Moroccan police said in a statement.
Three people, including a French national of Moroccan origin, with suspected links to a criminal drug trafficking network were arrested.
Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
Moroccan security services seized 179,657 kg of cannabis in 2019, according to official statistics.
