Gordon Igesund: Stuart Baxter must stay put!

13 Jul 2019, 04:12 GMT+10

Cape Town - Former Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund says Stuart Baxter must remain in charge despite their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final exit.

South Africa suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in the last eight, but did come away with some sense of pride having defeated hosts Egypt in the last 16.

However, it seems a section of supporters still want his head to roll after two defeats in the group stages - to Ivory Coast and Morocco - as well as an unconvincing victory against Namibia.

Nonetheless, Igesund believes that continuity is important for long-term success citing the fact he felt he was sacked prematurely by the South African Football Association (SAFA) in 2014.

Speaking to the SowetanLIVE website, he said: "We cannot keep on chopping and changing coaches every now and then. There should be continuity.

"I was fired for losing only two competitive games and Pitso Mosimane again was fired. It did not help. So I say Baxter must stay put."

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana are set to return on Saturday, July 13 from Egypt.
